Shiitake Mushrooms and Lentinan: A Source of Nutrition and Health

More than 1,000 years ago, there were special records about shiitake mushrooms in ancient Chinese books. Zhejiang Qingyuan created a glorious history of artificial cultivation of shiitake mushrooms in the world. More than 800 years ago, Wu Sangong, a farmer born in Qingyuan, invented the artificial cultivation technology of shiitake mushrooms, the "cutting flower method", which created a glorious history of artificial cultivation of shiitake mushrooms in the world.

In 2014, the Qingyuan Shiitake Mushroom Culture System was recognized as an important agricultural cultural heritage of China.

In 2022, the "Zhejiang Qingyuan Forest-Mushroom Co-cultivation System" was officially recognized as an important global agricultural cultural heritage by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. This is also the only agricultural cultural heritage in the world that focuses on edible fungi.

Lentinan is one of the important active ingredients extracted from Lentinula edodes, and has been widely studied in many fields such as immunomodulation, anti-tumor, anti-virus and anti-oxidation. The following are the latest progress and representative literature on Lentinan research:

1. Anti-tumor effect

Lentinan is one of the important ingredients in the field of anti-tumor research. It inhibits tumor growth by activating the immune system, enhancing the activity of macrophages, T cells and NK cells, and regulating the immune system. Studies have shown that Lentinan can not only directly inhibit tumor cells, but also can be used as an auxiliary component of chemotherapy to improve the treatment effect and reduce the side effects of chemotherapy.

 2. Immunomodulatory

Lentinan has a significant immune-enhancing effect. Studies have found that Lentinan can enhance the body's immune function by activating macrophages, T lymphocytes and NK cells, and promote the secretion of cytokines such as interleukin-2 and interferon-γ, thereby improving immunity. The immunomodulatory effect makes it show potential in anti-tumor and anti-infection.

3. Antiviral and antibacterial effects

Lentinan has attracted much attention for its antiviral and antibacterial activities. Studies have shown that Lentinan has an inhibitory effect on a variety of viruses such as influenza virus and herpes virus. It enhances the host's antiviral ability by regulating the body's immune system. At the same time, Lentinan also showed an inhibitory effect on certain bacteria and showed antibacterial potential in inhibiting bacterial growth.

4. Antioxidant and anti-aging

Lentinan is rich in antioxidant active ingredients, which can scavenge free radicals and reduce cellular oxidative damage. Studies have shown that Lentinan delays aging through antioxidant activity and protects cells from damage caused by oxidative stress. In addition, Lentinan showed significant antioxidant effects in both in vitro and in vivo experiments.

5. Metabolic health and blood lipid regulation

Lentinan has a positive effect on regulating blood lipids and improving metabolic health. Studies have shown that Lentinan can regulate serum cholesterol and lipid metabolism by inhibiting cholesterol synthesis, and has the effect of lowering blood lipids and protecting cardiovascular health. Due to its positive effect on metabolism, Lentinan has gradually been included in the research of diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
